Interface celebrates launch of global collections

Leading modular flooring manufacturer, Interface, will be unveiling its latest nature-inspired global campaign on September 17 2015.

Interface will be debuting the new Equal Measure, Near & Far and Narratives skinny plank ranges - designed by the company’s exclusive designer, David Oakey - at its showroom in Clerkenwell. The products embody the principles of biophilia and draw on the variation and calming colourways found in the outdoors – helping to create interiors that inspire beautiful thinking.

The collections are the latest example of Interface using nature to inspire innovation. In celebration of this, Interface will be collaborating with Exploration - a thought-leading architecture and design practice working in the field of biomimicry - to demonstrate the value of incorporating nature’s principles in to the built environment.

The flooring manufacturer will be hosting the ‘Designing with Nature’ Exhibition – designed and curated by Exploration Architecture, at the Interface showroom on Northburgh Street. This will run throughout London the Design Festival, from the 19th – 27th September and for a further six weeks until 29th October 2015.

Projects, including the Biomimetic Office Building, The Sahara Forest Project and the BioRock Pavilion, will be presented alongside a selection of short films and a myriad of natural specimens that inspired the designs - offering unique insight into the studio’s practice of learning from nature.

Exploration Architecture Director, Michael Pawlyn, commented: “At Exploration, we believe that there are huge environmental and economic benefits to be gained from studying the ingenious solutions that nature has evolved over 3.8 billion years.

Exploration Architecture Associate, Yaniv Peer, commented: “One of the breakthrough technologies that offers the potential to get much closer to the way in which nature constructs with such amazing frugality is found in 3D printing. We wanted to demonstrate how combining knowledge of Biomimicry and this revolutionary technology can create exceptionally resource efficient and beautiful structures that show how we can do more with a great deal less.

As part of the exhibition, a set of 3D printed display tables, made from biodegradable materials, have been designed by Exploration Architecture and printed by its lead fabrication partner 3DEE, along with Ultimaker and Lukas Oehmigen. The Tables are modelled on the adaptive growth patterns of trees and bones and combined with an SKO software to form a an exceptionally light weight and elegant design; underpinning Exploration’s working philosophy and embracing 3D printing capacity for radically increased resource efficiency.

Interface is also hosting a series of inspirational industry figures at its showroom on Northburgh Street throughout September and October. The talks will focus on the disciplines of Biophilia and Biomimicry, and the benefits of using the functionality and processes found in nature to inspire design.

Guest speakers will include: David Oakey, Designer and Owner of David Oakey Design; Michael Pawlyn, Founder, Exploration Architecture; Yaniv Peer, Associate at Exploration Architecture and Stijn Paridaens, CEO at 3D printing company, 3DEE.
