Regeneration today is about people, places and communities. It’s also about ensuring that sustainable spaces are created where people want to live and work.
As a legacy of the 2012 London Olympic Games, the Kidbrooke Village regeneration in The Royal Borough of Greenwich by Berkeley Homes (Urban Renaissance) Ltd brought all these elements together in one showcase development.
The regeneration would ensure that there would be the highest quality of architecture and design. And just as importantly it would require the highest quality materials which would stand the test of time.
The decision to award contracts on this high profile project would be down to levels of quality and professionalism of the chosen suppliers and contractors with London-based Architects Carey Jones setting extremely high standards all-round.
Carl Circus, UK Distribution Manager, AkzoNobel Wood Coatings said: “Kidbrooke Village is exactly the kind of project we have good technical knowledge of. After supplying colour charts and samples to the Architects we were delighted that our Sikkens Cetol WP 562 and Sikkens Cetol WF 792 products were specifi ed for this project.
"As in many of our projects we were also instrumental in guiding the Architects toward a line of other quality suppliers who could furnish Kidbrooke Village with the timber manufacturer, timber machiner and the trade coater.”
AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals. Calling on centuries of expertise, they supply industries and consumers worldwide with innovative products and sustainable technologies designed to meet the growing demands of our fast-changing planet.
Headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, they have approximately 47,000 people in around 80 countries and their portfolio includes well-known industrial wood coatings brands such as, Sikkens, ICLA and Zweihorn. Consistently ranked as one of the leaders in the area of sustainability, they are committed to making life more liveable and our cities more human.
Sikkens Industrial wood coatings are located on the Shadsworth Business Park in Blackburn, Lancashire, supplying the entire UK and Irish market through a nationwide network of established distributors, as well as through direct supply to some of the biggest manufacturers in the industry.
Dresser Mouldings in Rochdale would be the appointed coating company for the Kidbrooke project using approximately 60,000 lm of Metsa ThermoWood timber which also included off -site manufactured window infi ll panels. The final timber product was machined by Birmingham-based Vincent Timber Ltd who would supply this cost eff ective but durable timber substrate.
Bill Gunn, Managing Director, Dresser Mouldings commented: “The Kidbrooke Village regeneration was one of many projects of this type we have been involved in. And it’s also one of many where we have worked in conjunction with Vincent Timber.
“We were involved in supplying an AkzoNobel coating system using a fi lm build application applied to thermally modifi ed timber. The paint system consisted of three coats using their base preserve Sikkens Cetol WP 562 plus two top coats of Sikkens Cetol WF 792 with all ends sealed.
“In total we supplied around 50,000 lineal metres of a cladding profile and roughly 3000 litres of paint was used on this project over an 18 month period during 2011 & early 2012.”
Sikkens Cetol WP 562 from AkzoNobel is a waterborne, translucent base coat for constructions made of softwood and hardwood for exterior and interior. It has deep penetration with good run-off properties with excellent colouring and good levels of UV protection. Sikkens Cetol WF 792 also specified at Kidbrooke Village is a water-thinnable, translucent, matt, base coat and finish for profi le boards in a one pot, two-coat system for exterior and interior. It’s ready to use, has high water vapour permeability, good weather resistance and good levels of UV protection.
Bill Gunn also added: “One of the reasons for specifying and using AkzoNobel is down to the consistency of the paints and ease of application when applying many of the diff erent types of coating choices available.” He also added: "AkzoNobel and in particular Sikkens is a brand my customers trust and over the last six years AkzoNobel have been our number one provider of stains.”
Carl Circus finally goes on to say: “We can supply coatings to give a wide variety of finishes and are very proud in our ability to work with all parts of the supply chain as the Kidbrooke Village regeneration project proved.”
