TORMAX access for world-class theatre

As part of a significant refurbishment, TORMAX recommended installing two of their iMotion 1401 concealed operators to automate a double set of glass swing doors that welcome visitors into the impressive Sadler’s Wells theatre, Islington.

Uniquely designed with no abrading parts, the powerful synchronous motor of the iMotion 1401 requires the absolute minimum in maintenance and so can be neatly located out-of-sight under the floor. This has allowed a truly minimalist, full-glass entrance to be created within the theatre’s contemporary façade.

Sadler’s Wells is a world leader in contemporary dance presenting a vibrant year-round programme that brings together the very best of international and British dance. The Rosebery Avenue venue has been presenting theatrical products for over 300 years and this was the first refurbishment of the main areas in 15 years.
Working closely with specialist fit out and refurbishment contractors City Square Ltd, TORMAX recommended their concealed door operators as the ideal solution for this busy, modern building. With seating for 1,500 the theatre entrance is in high demand at peak-times, requiring the exceptional reliability delivered by the iMotion 1401. A user-friendly keypad allows staff to adjust hold-open times and opening and closing speeds to reflect changing levels of foot traffic. As with all TORMAX operators the iMotion is fully DDA-compliant, ensuring all visitors are welcomed to the theatre.

“This six week project included the refurbishment of the entire foyer including the bar areas and toilet facilities, a garden court as well as the installation of some external features too,” comments Karl Watson, Project Manager for City Square. “The glass façade of the building contrasts starkly with the bright red entrance into which the TORMAX doors are set, creating an eye-catching and contemporary feature.”

TORMAX iMotion 1401 operators have also been installed to great effect in countless entrances of historic constructions where the emphasis has been on maintaining the integrity of the existing building.

“The complete iMotion range of operators deliver door automation solutions for a wide range of locations,” explains MD for TORMAX, Simon Roberts. “However, the 1401 is proving to be increasingly important as its unique benefits are becoming recognised.”
