In the historic market town of Dorking in Surrey, more than 3,000m2 of Sika-Trocal S Membrane has provided a high performance and architecturally sympathetic finish to a series of roofs on a brand new 25,000 sq ft Waitrose supermarket.
Built in the centre of Dorking, the project included the design and construction of a new two-storey branch with underground split-level car park. Designed by B & R Architects and built by main contractor R G Carter, the new store replaced an 8,780 sq ft store with a large, modern development that blends seamlessly into the traditional surroundings.
Described as 'the most difficult and complex' new building project by Waitrose Construction Manager Ken Catt, the new store features several separate roofs split into various areas. Appointed to complete the waterproofing contract, licensed Sika-Trocal Licensed Contractor Robertson Roofing supplied the Type S system in slate grey and light grey to enhance the architect’s design and provide visual separation between adjacent roof levels.
“With a proven history in the retail environment, the Sika-Trocal S Membrane proved ideal for this multiple roof application across different levels,” said Mike Nicholls, Robertson Roofing. “The flexibility of the system also simplified a series of complex detailing works whilst helping to maintain both waterproofing integrity and the attractive finish.”
Laid over the insulation onto the deep profile metal deck, the Sika-Trocal Type S membrane was fastened using Sika-Trocal’s innovative laminated metal disc system. This system sees the membrane and insulation mechanically fixed to the roof in a single process, ensuring a fast installation minimising components required and reducing overall project costs.
To improve the roofs’ visual appeal, a series of ‘false’ architectural features were also created by Robertson Roofing using the Sika-Trocal S Membrane. As well as removing the need for additional materials and works on site, the Sika-Trocal system’s metal detailing lent itself perfectly to the creation of these historically sympathetic aspects whilst ensuring a continuous aesthetic.
Offering exceptional waterproofing, durability and a simple installation process, the cold-applied Type S roofing membrane from Sika-Trocal is approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to have a life expectancy in excess of 35 years. Combined with an efficient installation that ensures an improved seal, the Type S waterproofing membrane will deliver excellent performance at the new Waitrose store that will last for many years to come.
