Long Rake Spar on Rhyl Promenade

Long Rake Spar were thrilled to be involved in the recent Promenade Surfacing works carried out in Rhyl as part of the ‘West Rhyl Coastal Defence’ project which was designed to provide protection from flooding to more than 2,700 coastal properties, help to boost the local economy and attract visitors to the town.

This involved the installation of 3,000m2 of a variety of resin bonded aggregates supplied by Long Rake Spar.

In 2015 Dawnus Construction and Denbighshire County Council contacted specialist Resin flooring contractor Coatech to provide an attractive and durable surface for the new promenade in keeping with the seaside environment.

A Resin Bonded Surface dressing was proposed and Coatech approached Long Rake Spar for the supply of quality, natural aggregates in a variety of colours for the pathways and cycleways along the promenade.

The client was so pleased with the works carried out that a further phase of works was created and awarded to Coatech; an area totalling an additional 2,000 m2.

Coatech enlisted the help of Constructing Excellence in Wales on the project, taking part in their ‘Enabling Zero Waste’ initiative. The aim was to work towards achieving ‘Zero Waste to landfill’ on the project. Part of this involved finding an outlet for all waste aggregate used on the project and overall around 8 tonnes of aggregates was reused and diverted from landfill. One of the recipients was a local community group who used the donated aggregates within the landscaping of a ‘community garden’ they were creating.

This was a complex project which required excellent liaison with numerous residential and commercial stakeholders and the effective management of public interface along the busy promenade [as well as battling the weather at the great British seaside!]

The decorative, slip-resistant surface perfectly complements the surrounding environment and creates a safe surface for all promenade users.

Contractor: Coatech

Client: Dawnus Construction and Denbighshire County Council

Completion: March 2016

Area: 5000m²
