A specification delivered by ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, a division of ASSA ABLOY UK, the global leader in door opening solutions, for an environmentally friendly motorway services in Gloucester, has been honoured on the 2016 RIBA National Awards List.
The prestigious awards are given to buildings across the UK, recognised as making a significant contribution to the field of architecture. The list of 46 included the Gloucester Services, designed by Glenn Howells Architects, which is based in the Cotswold countryside, on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Considerable attention has been paid to minimising the environmental impact of the development and to preserve the views from the surrounding area. Recognised by RIBA, which quoted “The facilities are carefully planned to isolate the service environment from the motorway and succeed in creating a place that emanates quality as well as clarity.”
Bedded into the rolling landscape, the project, which opened in 2015, was initiated by a local Gloucester charity, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust and was not only built using local materials but was also designed to help local businesses prosper by selling regional produce.
