LANGLEY COLLABORATES WITH NBS TO SUPPORT THE SPECIFICATION PROCESS

Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd has partnered with NBS to deliver ten of its roofing systems as structured data available for architects, specifiers, designers and engineers to use. It is providing construction industry professionals with BIM objects hosted on the NBS National BIM Library and product information embedded in NBS Chorus, the newly launched cloud based specification platform. Working together, Langley and NBS have been able to share Langley’s knowledge and expertise along with its BIM objects and specifications, offering increased support for architects, specifiers and contractors, as well as building owners.

According to a recent NBS Construction Technology report, 90% of respondents agreed that digitisation will significantly impact on their work. In particular, respondents predicted that technology would change methods of communication – especially between those working on a project and the end client – as well as the necessary collaboration across the supply chain.

Due to the growing use of digital tools within construction processes, it was key for Langley to make its BIM objects and product specifications widely accessible and easily incorporated into models and specifications. Through collaboration with NBS, Langley has been able to achieve this.

A NBS BIM Object has been certified as a defined standard of requirements for the information, geometry, and presentation of BIM objects, providing reassurance of quality and consistency that facilitates greater collaboration across the construction industry.

Langley recognises the importance of the accessibility of its BIM Objects on the NBS National BIM Library, providing extensive product details as part of its range of roofing systems. Its products are also structured to multiple classification systems, including Uniclass 2015, and embedded into all NBS specification software. The NBS Chorus cloud specification software allows users to link the 3D model and the specification, therefore Langley’s products can be fully embedded into the construction project. Access to this information ensures that architects and specifiers are fully informed, and all components are incorporated and compatible. All of Langley’s associated product information is automatically linked through. This assists in making sure the optimum solution is designed and specified.

Belinda Fletcher, Head of Marketing at Langley UK said: “Here at Langley, we recognise how vital it is that the construction industry embraces digitisation to assist with streamlining the specification process, to minimise errors and ensure consistency. Langley is a strong advocate of the 100% Hackitt initiative and it is important that we facilitate the specification process to ensure all technical aspects are fully understood, enabling a quick, confident and informed decision for those specifying a waterproofing solution.”

Making sure that margins for error are reduced throughout the construction process was also crucial for both Langley and NBS. As digitised plans can be easily shared, coordination amongst all trades on site can be improved. This reduces on site errors and the chance of scheduling clashes.

Lee Jones, Head of Manufacturer Solutions at NBS, said: “During the initial conversations with Langley, it was clear that making its BIM objects and product specifications easily accessible to key decision makers at every stage of a project – from brief, design and construction right through to handover and maintenance – was vital.

“By working together, we have been able to provide Langley with a unique opportunity to build relationships with industry professionals and provide the necessary support throughout every stage of a project. Langley’s BIM objects are hosted on the NBS National BIM Library, included in specification software with NBS Plus and ribaproductselector.com. Langley is also part of the RIBA CPD Providers Network, delivered by NBS, through which it can share its knowledge and expertise with those that use its products.”

BIM and structured data provide key benefits to the end client - having access to a final model that accurately represents the finished project will assist with facility management and also provides them with a vital audit trail.

Langley’s ten BIM objects are accessible online via the NBS National BIM library, as well as ribaproductselector.com and are free to download here:
