VINCI Building has completed the new £14.5m two-storey building to house the proposed Christie at Macclesfield cancer centre.
The plans for the new cancer centre were approved by East Cheshire Council in September 2019 and demolition started in February 2020, just weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown.
The main new build element of works started in July 2020 and were delivered through Pagabo’s Major Works Framework.
The Christie at Macclesfield will transform cancer care in Cheshire, the High Peak area of Derbyshire and parts of North Staffordshire, providing care closer to home for more than 1,500 existing Christie patients a year. It will treat its first patient in December.
More than 28,000 sq ft building offers outpatient care, palliative care, holistic support and information services. It provides staff with the ability to conduct 12,500 radiotherapy treatments a year. It will also enable 6,800 chemotherapy and haematology treatments as well.
The Christie at Macclesfield has the ability to accommodate 46,000 patient visits a year.
Garry Bowker, North West Regional Director, said: "It has been a pleasure to deliver another successful project for The Christie. We were first engaged on this project at the height of the pandemic last year and to be stood here today looking at this exceptionally high quality facility delivered on time is an absolute credit to everyone involved; the VINCI project team, our supply chain, design team, the clients professional team, the wider stakeholders and of course The Christie themselves.
“This new facility will bring class leading cancer treatment services to the people of East Cheshire and surrounding areas and will undoubtedly improve outcomes."
Jonathan Parker, National Framework Manager at Pagabo, said: “We were delighted to have supported The Christie NHS Foundation Trust with the appointment of VINCI Construction UK. Our Major Works Framework enabled the Trust to appoint their contractor of choice via a direct award which was done at speed in a fully compliant manner. Having worked with the contractor on a previous project, this was hugely advantageous for them and a key benefit our frameworks can offer clients.
“To see this project finished to such a high standard is testament to the whole delivery team and their commitment throughout a year of challenges. Well done to everyone involved.”
