BSI supports decarbonisation of construction sector

Revisions to the UK’s Construction Playbook, the official document which lays out the public sector’s approach to building and infrastructure works, have been published.

BSI, in its role as the UK National Standards Body, is proud to have our standards included, helping HM Government to achieve its outcomes for the built environment sector.

The Construction Playbook has been updated to include enhanced guidance on net zero carbon and environmental performance so that it is easier to ensure the sustainability of building and infrastructure projects. In particular, the government has included clear statements that whole life carbon assessments should be undertaken for all HMG construction projects, supporting best-in-class procurement standards.

As a positive catalyst for change, working with our all-important committee experts, BSI produces and regularly updates a selection of Standards and standardization products which support the key policies outlined within The Construction Playbook and which are recommended by the UK government. These include:

  • Cross-Cutting Priorities: Built Environment Competence Programme and PAS 9980 supporting building safety reform;
  • Modern Methods of Construction: ISO 9001 being used as a benchmark for quality planning processes;
  • Early Engagement and Clear Specifications: PAS 2080 supporting the requirement for consistent approach to whole life carbon assessments;
  • Successful relationships: ISO 44001 supporting the development and maintenance of supply chain relationships; and
  • Transition to Operation: BS 8536 and the UK BIM Framework more generally support both ‘soft landings’ as well as the development of an as-built project information model.

Anthony Burd, Director of Sectors, BSI said: “We are delighted to be able to further support government with the priorities outlined within The Construction Playbook.

“As one of the key government policy documents relating to the built environment, alongside the Transforming Infrastructure Performance Roadmap to 2030 and the National Infrastructure Strategy, we hope to continue making government’s vision for the built environment a reality through the development and curation of good practice.”

Their inclusion within The Construction Playbook demonstrates both the Government’s support of Technical Standards as well as BSI’s ability to support Government policy and the UK built environment sector.
