As the UK construction sector braces itself for a challenging year ahead, Stuart Nicholson, roof systems director at Marley, outlines some of the key challenges and opportunities for specifiers in 2023.
Following the introduction of Part L, last year was a pivotal point in the nation’s journey to achieving the net zero target set for the middle of the century. Yet, with sustainability a focus that will continue to intensify, a lack of transparency across the supply chain continues to pose a challenge for the sector.
“From a sustainability perspective, closer supply chain collaboration will further support specifiers when embarking on the process of identifying and selecting appropriate, high performing, and proven solutions, together with effective management of project build schedules,” he said.
“Against this backdrop, and as homeowners continue to face rising energy prices, we anticipate seeing a rise in the number of specifiers seeking ways to introduce sustainable energy into homes across the UK. These technologies not only present an opportunity to support the drive to reduce carbon emissions, but also provide practical solutions against energy price volatility.
“In tandem with the increased inclusion of more renewable technologies, we also expect to see a rise in the specification of complementary products and accessories that offer enhanced safety credentials, something which is of particular importance when considering the rise in the installation of electric vehicle charging points, solar PV, and heat pumps.
“It is clear the challenges of delivering a sustainable future cannot be fixed overnight, especially as the UK looks set to enter another period of recession. However, the anticipated increase in the number of homes built with the inclusion of renewable technologies, also presents specifiers with several opportunities to ensure the projects they deliver can meet the demands of both today and tomorrow.”
