The Society of Façade Engineering (SFE) announced the winners of the 2024 SFE Façade Engineering & Design Awards at Old Billingsgate in London.
The awards recognised significant achievements in façade engineering, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence. The event coincided with SFE’s 20th anniversary, marking two decades of contributions to the façade engineering industry.
The evening was supported by headline sponsor Reynaers Aluminium and category sponsors including AtkinsRealis, Buro Happold, CIBSE, Effisus, Patrick Ryan Associates, Seele and WSP. Winners represented both UK and international projects across various categories.
Among the 16 awards presented, several individuals were recognised for their remarkable contributions to façade engineering.
Katie Cunningham received the Dissertation of the Year Award for her innovative research on ‘Design for Disassembly and Reuse: A UK Methodology for Assessing the Disassembly and Reuse of Façades.’
The Young Façade Engineer of the Year award was presented to Roberta Giacalone of Wintech, recognised for her technical expertise, dedication to advancing façade engineering, and active contributions to major projects, alongside her commitment to furthering her skills through advanced study.
John Downes received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to advancing façade engineering standards, particularly in health, safety, and sustainability.
Dr. Hywel Davis was honoured with an Honorary Fellowship from the SFE in recognition of his exceptional dedication to the Society of Façade Engineering and the broader industry.
Hosted by Emmanuel Sonubi, the ceremony highlighted the technical achievements of the façade engineering community. SFE Chair, Rimmy Vij, commented on the industry’s commitment to sustainable engineering solutions, emphasising SFE’s role in knowledge sharing and professional development: "Our members continue to push boundaries in design, sustainability, and technical excellence, shaping buildings that are both innovative and environmentally responsive. Tonight’s awards honour that commitment and the remarkable projects advancing our industry."
The SFE extends its thanks to all event sponsors and supporters, including the event’s organising committee and judging panel, led by Chair of Judges Saverio Pasetto. Their contributions ensured the success of this year’s awards.
