The construction company behind a neighbourhood of 660 new homes is celebrating the anniversary of its completion by reflecting on 12 months of successes.
Willmott Dixon handed over the completed Gascoigne Estate Phases 2 in November 2023, followed by Phase 3a this year and has spent this year receiving industry plaudits for its work on the Barking and Dagenham project.
Working with customer Be First, the local authority’s regeneration arm, the Hitchin-based constructors delivered a project that included the borough’s first net-zero carbon building.
Director Steve Kitchen said: “Everyone is incredibly proud of the work we did on the Gascoigne Estate regeneration. To have spent the year receiving awards and recognition for the project is incredibly satisfying. No-one sets out to win awards, but when they come it is a huge moment for everyone involved.”
The energy efficient homes, replacing the 1960s tower block that stood in their place, have attracted praise throughout the sector.
The estate won Green Building Project of the Year at the UK Green Business Awards and added to that success with victory in the Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards (London and the South East), where it received the accolade for Residential Project of the Year.
It was also shortlisted for Building Magazine Project of the Year at the Building Magazine Awards and Residential Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence National Awards.
Gascoigne East Phase 2 included 434 homes across four blocks, with 191 affordable properties, 79 shared ownership and 164 for the private rental market and included a Passivhaus residential block.
Green practices were at the heart of the development, not just in the homes themselves, but also on site with Willmott Dixon recycling more than 4,000 timber pallets as part of the work.
“Sustainability is essential for creating resilient, low-carbon buildings, supporting local communities and addressing climate and biodiversity challenges.
“Our 'Now or Never' strategy, central to our 2030 vision, guides sustainable construction to ensure future generations inherit a thriving environment. This commitment not only reinforces our environmental impact but also strengthens our business, as we aim to embed sustainability in every aspect of our operations.”
