UK BIM Framework showcases guidance AI search

The UK BIM Framework team is creating a series of short videos showing its artificial intelligence (AI) search function at work.

The free online resource is developed and maintained by nima and BSI. It sets out standards, guidance, checklists and FAQs to help individuals and organisations understand the fundamental principles of information management using BIM.

In June 2024, the Framework was updated to incorporate several improvements, including a new AI search function, enabled by the Morta platform.

The videos show a user asking ‘Morta AI’ a simple question – What is a CDE? or What is a naming convention? for example – and then getting a text explanation based on content from within the UK BIM Framework. Guidance editor and co-author Sarah Davidson says the team has identified some strong early subjects: “The early posts are prioritised because the Morta metrics indicate the topic is a top 10 search.

“AI isn’t perfect and repeating the same question multiple times will result in different answers. Also two people can ask the same question and get different responses. But in our initial tests, the responses have proved reasonably reliable and informative.”

The videos will be released weekly in posts on LinkedIn via the main nima page, and also shared via the UK BIM Framework page.

Co-author David Churcher says: “Our aim is to generate something that is quick and easy to produce, that encourages visitors to the UK BIM Framework and starts a conversation. We would like to get the support of the guidance community to share and comment on posts so that reach and visibility of posts is extended as much as possible.”
