New coating has bio-based content and matches performance of traditional coatings while delivering more sustainable benefits
Sikkens Wood Coatings, part of AkzoNobel, has enhanced its portfolio of market-leading wood coatings with RUBBOL WF 3350, a midcoat and topcoat that contains bio-based material to deliver excellent performance while supporting end-users toward their sustainability goals.
RUBBOL WF 3350 is a sprayable 1K waterborne opaque coating for wooden components. Suitable for both interior and exterior use, it delivers good hiding power, excellent weather resistance and no dirt pick-up.
With an impressive 22%-24% bio-based content, as verified by external C-14 testing using ASTM D6866 (Method B), RUBBOL WF 3350 offers several notable advantages over traditional solventborne coatings:
Reduced carbon footprint: RUBBOL WF 3350 has a significantly lower carbon footprint – around 5% for BW01 and 8% for BN00, compared to the non-bio-based equivalent.
Excellent performance: The product maintains the high-quality standards expected from Sikkens Wood Coatings, tested and verified in accordance with AkzoNobel’s Global Weathering Program.
Peace of mind: RUBBOL WF 3350 is backed by the Sikkens Wood Coatings Extralife warranty program, providing end-users with added confidence in its longevity and performance.
Advancing sustainability in wood coatings
The bio-based content used in the new product are renewable materials derived from plants. By reducing the dependency on fossil-based raw materials and lowering the use of non-renewable resources, RUBBOL WF 3350 helps to contribute to the circular economy.
Sabrina Garasi, Regional Product Marketing Manager, EMEA Wood Finishes at AkzoNobel, comments: “RUBBOL WF 3350 represents a step forward in coating technology. We've successfully developed a product containing bio-based materials that matches the high-performance standards of equivalent coatings, ensuring that beauty and value endure, even in the harshest weather conditions. It showcases our leading-edge R&D capability and our commitment to developing innovative products with more sustainable benefits* for our customers.”
Tessa Slagter, Sustainable Innovation Manager at AkzoNobel, emphasises the product's credentials: "The introduction of RUBBOL WF 3350 aligns perfectly with AkzoNobel's commitment to sustainable innovation. By utilising bio-based raw materials, we're not only helping to reduce our environmental impact but also paving the way for a more circular economy in the wood coatings industry and supporting our customers on their own sustainability journeys. We work closely with customers, helping them to identify opportunities to reduce their carbon footprint and make their businesses more profitable and this new product presents a perfect opportunity for this.”
RUBBOL WF 3350 seamlessly integrates with AkzoNobel's ‘It all adds up’ campaign, which emphasises that every action counts when it comes to sustainability. The new coating exemplifies the campaign's core message by demonstrating how small changes in product formulations can lead to sustainability benefits, while meeting the coatings needs of end-users and their customers.
