Partner sought to accelerate delivery of landmark mixed use site in Birmingham

Savills has been instructed by VITA Group to find a partner to accelerate the delivery of the Goods Station scheme in Birmingham city centre.

The instruction, which will focus on the delivery of the Build to Rent (BTR) elements of the scheme, follows the recent news that Vita Group has secured planning permission for a new, sustainable urban neighbourhood on the former Axis site on Holliday Street in the city.

Goods Station is a landmark destination for the city, delivering a best in class mixed use environment in the heart of the city centre. Located a short walk from Birmingham New Street Station, the site covers approximately 4.15 acres, adjacent to The Mailbox.

The site includes detailed planning consent for 990 residential homes across three buildings, 720 purpose built Student Accommodation (PBSA) beds, 278 bed serviced apartments, a 17,000 square foot food hall and one acre of public realm.

Michael Maguire, development director at Savills, comments, “Goods Station provides a rare opportunity to set a new benchmark for BTR development in Birmingham city centre, in a landmark location. The recently granted planning permission will enable a true mixed use development and a new destination for city centre living.”

Goods Station will become a welcoming gateway between Westside and the city centre core, significantly improving accessibility and creating a new route for pedestrians from New Street Station to the theatres, bars and restaurants of Centenary Square, Broad Street and Brindley Place.

Its delivery will also provide a significant economic boost to Birmingham’s economy. In its construction phase alone, the regeneration of the site is expected to create circa 485 jobs in the West Midlands and will contribute circa £245 million to the local economy, according to Vita Group.

Vita Group has also confirmed recently that, once complete, the Goods Station will continue to benefit the city, creating around 185 jobs on-site, generating £2.4 million additional council tax for the city and adding circa £7.8 million to Birmingham’s economy each year.

Alex Kelly, Acquisitions Director at Vita Group, said: “Goods Station will transform a brownfield site into a 21st century sustainable urban neighbourhood, creating hundreds of new homes, a public food hall and an urban square for Birmingham’s residents and visitors to enjoy all year round.

“Building on our strong track record of delivering and operating high-quality mixed use schemes - including Circle Square in Manchester - we look forward to bringing forward an exemplary, sustainable development to Birmingham.”
