While for many, working outside in the summer months may sound appealing, for roofers, builders and other construction workers, it’s essential to protect against the hidden health risks associated with prolonged sun exposure.
That’s the key message behind Marley’s long-running safety campaign, ‘Safe in the Sun’, which is designed to remind outdoor workers that, when the heat is on, it’s vital to take precautions to stay safe.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the risk of outdoor workers developing nonmelanoma skin cancer increases by 60% due to sun exposure. Research published in Skin Health and Disease also reveals that melanoma is significantly more concentrated in upper body areas, such as the face and ears, compared to the lower body. These findings highlight the critical need for campaigns like Safe in the Sun, which prioritise worker health and safety by raising awareness of these risks.
This year, Marley’s Safe in the Sun campaign focuses on the ‘hot spot’ areas that can often be forgotten about when it comes to applying protection from the sun’s rays. These hot spots include the neck, ears, forearms, scalp, nose and hands, and regular application of sun cream, particularly in these areas, is vital.
A combination of light workwear with tightly woven fabrics, and sun cream offering an SPF of at least 30, can help to form a strong barrier to protect against the potential harm of the sun’s UV rays. And while the heat is on, it’s also important outdoor workers stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water, helping to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion.
To help roofers keep on top of their hot spot protection this summer, Marley is offering 500 free Safe in the Sun branded giveaway bundles. Each includes a factor-30 sunscreen mini bottle with handy carabiner clip plus an aluminium water bottle and insulating can cooler sleeve to keep drinks chilled.
Dan Redfern, Head of Marketing Communications for Marley, comments: “The importance of staying safe while working outdoors is more relevant than ever, as we’ve seen a prolonged dry and sunny period during this year’s spring months. Safe in the Sun reminds workers to remain vigilant and protect themselves by taking a few simple precautions, all to ensure they can continue to work safely as the hotter summer sun arrives.
“Having launched Safe in the Sun more than 20 years ago, our 2025 campaign once again sees us giving away items such as sunscreen and water bottles to help roofers stay safe and better protect the hot spots often forgotten about when applying suncream, such as the neck and ears.
“Our overall message to those working outside is to take personal safety seriously. Wearing light clothing, regularly applying sun cream and using drinks flasks are small, but important, ways workers can look after themselves and stay safe from the hidden dangers that the sun and UV rays present.”
