Wates has reached an important moment in the transformation of the Channel View estate as we celebrated the topping out of Block A with our partners at Cardiff Council.
Tŷ y Dorlân will provide 102 modern Community Living apartments for older residents in a safe and welcoming environment.
These new homes form part of Phase 1 of the regeneration, which is replacing the existing tower block and delivering high quality homes that support independence, connection and wellbeing. Existing residents of the tower block will be prioritised for the new apartments, ensuring the regeneration supports the community already living here.
Designed with generous living spaces, plenty of natural light, private balconies and shared community facilities including a rooftop terrace and café Tŷ y Dorlân will give older residents a comfortable home and a place to feel part of a thriving neighbourhood.
Local leaders Council leader Cllr Huw Thomas, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities Cllr Lynda Thorne and Counsel General Julie James MS joined our team on site to mark the completion of the main frame of Block A.
This follows strong progress on Block B, known as Trem y Môr, the neighbouring building which will provide 24 Independent Living apartments and is on track to be completed later this year. Tŷ y Dorlân is expected to welcome residents by the end of 2027.
Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cabinet Member for Housing & Communities, said: “Topping out Block A is a proud moment for Channel View and a tangible step towards delivering accessible and energy efficient homes for older residents in Grangetown.
“Only last summer, we marked the topping out of Block B when we had the chance to appreciate the stunning outlook across Cardiff Bay this new building offers. It’s fantastic to see that the views from Block A do not disappoint either, and how much progress has been made since then.
“This regeneration is about re-imagining the neighbourhood – not only with new homes, but with inclusive community spaces, better links to schools, parks, shops and public transport, and a greener and safer environment for years to come.”

The wider regeneration will deliver up to 370 new low carbon homes, improved public spaces and safer, easier routes across the area. By replacing older accommodation and creating new places to walk, cycle and spend time, the programme is strengthening connections throughout Grangetown and the wider city.
Phase 1 sets the foundations for this long term vision with modern, sustainable homes that meet the needs of older people and help build a stronger and more connected community.
