The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has responded to the UK Government’s call for evidence on a strategy for the built environment professions, trades and occupations which builds upon the earlier consultation on a single construction regulator.
The feedback received through this call for evidence will help inform the Government’s Professions Strategy, which is expected in Spring 2027.
CIOB’s response focussed on the role of the client and the challenges, behaviours and influences on decision making during the construction phase of the building lifecycle.

In its response, CIOB called for government to set standards as the construction industry’s main client, lead the way in developing client competence and produce guidance on how a construction client can demonstrate fundamental competence.
The response was formed with support from CIOB members, who shared their expertise and opinions via a number of roundtables and engagement sessions, including at the organisation’s annual Members’ Forum event, which was held in London in June.
Dr Victoria Hills, CEO at CIOB, said: “It’s important we take opportunities to share our views and expertise with Government to shape the policies and regulations that impact the construction industry, so I’m pleased we’ve been able to provide such a detailed response to this call for evidence.
“Improving the quality and safety of the built environment depends on the competency of construction managers, clients and everyone working across an industry that is made up of a wide range of organisations from large tier one contractors to SMEs and sole traders. Therefore, it is crucial the future regulation of built environment professions is proportionate, responsible and effective.
“Our thanks go to all our members who fed into our response, and we’ll be sure to update them once we hear what the Government’s next steps will be.”
