The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has opened the recruitment process for a new Chair to the Board of Trustees.
The current Chair, Steve Nitman FCIOB, will stand down from the role in June 2027 at the end of his term.
The Chair is an independent and objective leader, able to create and maintain a transparent, trusting and open environment and providing constructive oversight, encouragement and guidance to the Trustees and Institute’s executive team.

Steve Nitman FCIOB has offered his thoughts on the role of Chair: “To serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees to the Chartered Institute of Building is an incredibly important and fulfilling role. Alongside and with the CEO, the President and the Board of Trustees, the Chair works at the highest level to make the CIOB the professional body of choice, with the public benefit at its core. Supporting CIOB to continuously improve, enhance its standing and deliver on its mission is a most rewarding challenge and experience and, as its outgoing Chair, I recommend this opportunity.”
Dr Victoria Hills, CIOB’s Chief Executive, said: “There’s no doubt that the Chair role is an important and influential one and Steve has done an excellent job, admirably and expertly helping to keep the CIOB ship steady. I’ve enjoyed working in lockstep with the Chair and our productive relationship has set strong foundations on which Steve’s successor and the CIOB team can build. I look forward to welcoming the new Chair into their role.”
Saul Humphrey FCIOB, CIOB’s President, said: “The CIOB President and the CIOB Chair work as a team to support CIOB and its public benefit remit; the presidential role is very much an external-facing, ambassadorial role and the Chair is often a behind-the-scenes role but our goals are always aligned in representing the members and the sector as best we can. I’m very much looking forward to welcoming the incoming Chair and working to support their induction before they take the reins in June next year".
Corporate members (MCIOB / FCIOB) can now apply for the position of Chair. Further information on the role and the application form can be found here: Chair of the Board of Trustees | CIOB
Deadline for applications is Friday 9 October 2026.
A more detailed timetable for the recruitment process can be found in the guidelines document.
