High-capacity air-to-water heat pump combines with Qvantum QG for fifth-generation heat networks in multi-residential buildings.

Swedish heat pump manufacturer, Qvantum, has launched a new 50kW air-to-water heat pump, the QA50, designed for multi-residential and light commercial developments in the UK. Paired with the Qvantum QG water-to-water apartment heat pump, the QA50 enables a complete ambient loop solution for residential developments, delivering efficient, low-carbon heating, hot water, and cooling at both building and apartment level.

As the UK market continues to demand low-carbon heating solutions for residential developments, ambient heat loops are an increasingly attractive solution. Typically operating at low temperatures between 10°C and 30°C, they offer unparalleled efficiency, generating significantly lower heat losses than high-temperature networks while also acting like thermal batteries to optimise energy use during periods of low electricity prices.

With a wide operating window, the QA50 is ideal as the primary energy source for low-temperature ambient loop systems. Its compact dimensions and modular design allow multiple units to be combined, creating a scalable solution that can be tailored to project requirements while maximising available plant room space. Its environmental impact is also minimised through the use of a natural refrigerant, R290.

While designed primarily for multi-residential ambient heat loop applications, the QA50 is also effective as a standalone heating and cooling system for a wide range of light commercial buildings, including offices, leisure facilities and mixed-use developments. In this setting, its modular design and scalable capacity make it a flexible, low-carbon solution, that doesn’t compromise on performance or occupant comfort.

The QA50 operates with the QC PRO controller, providing centralised management of multi-unit systems through a single intelligent platform. This enables housing providers and facilities managers to integrate and manage heating, cooling, hot water, and system components, simplifying system control, improving operational efficiency and performance, and providing visibility across the entire heating system.

“The QA50 marks another important milestone in Qvantum’s mission to decarbonise urban homes,” commented Jack Kerr, Product Manager, Qvantum UK. “As ambient heat loops become increasingly attractive for providing sustainable and efficient energy systems, developers need the tools and equipment to ensure these systems are viable for as many developments as possible. Following the launch of the Qvantum QG earlier this year, the addition of the QA50 enables any multi-occupancy building to benefit from a low-temperature network, without any loss of flexibility, performance, efficiency or apartment-level control.”

Key features and benefits include:

  • Wide operating envelope (-25°C to +43°C) ideal for ambient loop systems
  • Compact footprint suitable for retrofit and new build
  • Simple integration with existing and new energy systems
  • Natural refrigerant R290 for lower environmental impact
