Overview

Craigleith Road is a new residential development which has delivered eight, four-bedroom contemporary family townhouses to its sought-after central location in the Scottish capital. The project was designed by Studio LBA for client Wemyss Properties Ltd.

The modern, sophisticated and stylish facade of the development was achieved through combining traditional brickwork with a metal cladding system. The architect selected Anvil RJF1 vertical metal panels in a dark bronze metallic colour for the upper storeys to contrast and complement the brick facade. The Anvil RJF1 metal facade is vertical and stepped back in order to compliment the sloping roofs of the neighbouring houses.

Each development comes with front and back garden space and designated off-street parking, which enhances the leafy surroundings of the townhouses and makes a strong statement of contemporary style.

Craigleith Road is located just a short distance away from Edinburgh’s world-famous culture and attractions, being just a 15-minute bus journey from Princes Street and the West End.

Concept

The architectural design for the development was to blur the boundaries between the inside and outside. This was achieved with large interior skylights, outdoor back garden space and three external terraces looking out upon the gardens.

The architect wanted to extenuate the surrounding outdoor areas and utilise these as part of the design concept because the development’s surrounding area boasts tree-adorned streets and a number of parks, including Edinburgh’s beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens.

Each unit features open plan living and kitchen areas, featuring panoramic windows and large skylight flooding the core of each house with natural sunlight. The design concept was to maximise the living space whilst blurring the lines between the indoor and the outdoor, which has been immaculately achieved.

Completion

The traditional facing brickwork highlights and complements the more modern construction material, Anvil metal facade. By pairing a buff, light-coloured brick with a dark bronze coloured facade, the development stands out amongst its surroundings. The neighbouring buildings are a mix of residential properties from Victorian bungalows and Georgian terraces, to 1960s semi-detached housing. The new scheme brings Craigleith Road into the 21st century, with its mix of construction materials and exemplar modern living, whilst simultaneously harmonising with the existing vernacular.
