When Bond Bryan Architects received the brief to design a second University Technical College on the Olympic Legacy Park in Sheffield the vision was to engage a unique cluster of world-class companies, service providers, colleges and universities.
The aim is to create an outstanding educational experience and to inspire and nurture young people to have the skills, passion, empathy and talent to work in computing, healthcare technology, sports science, exercise medicine and wellbeing sectors.
Bond Bryan’s design includes a cantilever over a double height main entrance leading to the full-height Project Centre, which creates a great impact and an outstanding first impression of the UTC 2 Sheffield for Human Sciences and Computing. A plaza integrates external learning, testing, analysis, discussion, gathering and games areas such as table tennis. A south facing green roof at third floor level will support the provision of a science garden area.
Geoff Halliwell, Director at Bond Bryan Architects, said: “UTC 2 Sheffield aspires to become a centre of excellence and stretch all learners to realise their full potential, drawing on world class models of best education practice to ensure each and every learner is fulfilled in their academic and personal ambitions. Creating the right design for the UTC is the first step towards achieving that goal. Specialist teaching facilities on the ground and first floors of the four-storey building support the specialisms in human sciences and computing. The dynamic Project Centre at the base of the central atrium will create a spacious, light and contemporary learning environment. Second and third floor terraces and a dining space on second floor level offer excellent views of the Olympic Legacy Park.”
UTC 2 Sheffield will source 10 per cent of its energy from renewable sources with Sheffield’s district heating presently being considered.
Paul Cleminson, Construction Director at BAM Construction Ltd, who have been appointed as contractors on this project commented: “BAM are very pleased to be extending their relationship with Bond Bryan in delivering UTC 2 Sheffield, adding to the previous successful delivery of schools and colleges for the Education Funding Agency (EFA).”
UTC 2 Sheffield is being led by The Sheffield College. Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry are co-sponsors. Andrew Cropley, Executive Director, Strategic Planning and Business Development, The Sheffield College, said: "We are investing in the skills that Sheffield City Region employers need, supporting economic growth. Employers have influenced the building design and will be central to the curriculum, so that young people are equipped with high level technical skills as well as academic qualifications to go on to high quality careers."
Construction of UTC 2 Sheffield on the Olympic Legacy Park is planned to commence in October and it will open in September 2016 holding 600 pupils aged 14 to 19.
