Centre stage for F. Ball at London 2012 Games

UK leading manufacturer of subfloor preparation products and flooring adhesives, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., took centre stage at the London 2012 Games last year, thanks to its sprayable adhesive solution, Styccobond S930.

The high performance adhesive proved to be the ideal solution for Tufts Flooring Ltd, who installed the 8,000sqm vinyl floorcovering, depicting the River Thames snaking through London’s East End, which was the final floor display for the London 2012 opening ceremony last July.

The decorative floorcovering, was printed and produced by specialist performance floor company Le Mark Group and is the largest ever printed stage floor in the world.

Specifically designed to withstand the heavy volumes of traffic, rehearsals and equipment over a six-week period, as well as being aesthetically perfect for the high profile event. The flooring was installed outside in the wettest June on record for over 100 years.

Project Manager for Le Mark Group, Dave Cartwright, said: “The speed in which the spray adhesive could be applied and dry was crucial to the success of the installation. Limited by installation time schedules and the terrible weather, we were glad that the Styccobond S930 didn’t let us down.”

Styccobond S930 helped overcome time constraints with its high bond strength and impressive 10m2 per litre coverage capabilities. Furthermore, with its protein-free, low odour formulation, the adhesive also met all of LOCOG’s environmental requirements for the temporary installation of the vinyl cover on the wooden sub-stage.

Dean Tanner, Director of Tufts Flooring, was delighted with the project. He said: “Being a part of the London 2012 Games was a unique, albeit pressured, opportunity. Only the best result would be acceptable, and the product selection was a huge part of this.

"When I approached F. Ball, they could not be more helpful and invited me to attend a specialist demostration day at their training facility in Staffordshire. This helped us get to grips with the sprayable Styccobond system.

“The end result was flawless; the vinyl sheet looked perfect from start to finish, and not one join or section of the vinyl lifted, despite all the heavy rain, standing puddles of water and rehearsals before the opening ceremony.”
