F T Leisure was appointed to design, supply, install and commission the swimming pool water treatment and filtration systems for a 25-metre eight-lane competition-standard swimming pool, a separate 18-metre learner pool and a spa pool for the York Sport Village, a new £9 million sports facility which is open to the University of York students and staff and the public. The first phase will also feature a full size 3G Astroturf pitch and three further five-a-side pitches; indoor facilities include a 100-station computerised fitness suite, floor space for classes such as spinning and yoga, three specialist treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms and a cafeteria.
The contract was awarded to F T Leisure through the principal contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine, with whom FT has previously worked on the Wentworth Leisure Centre, Northumbria Sports Centre and the Bulgari Hotel & Residences. The value of the F T Leisure contract was approximately £320,000 and the design and installation ran over a 12 month period. Funding for the project came from the University (£5 million) and the Council (£3 million) with the remainder being allocated through sporting grants.
The filtration system is based on medium sand filtration with standard but highly effective pool water treatment processes including disinfection, ph control, flocculation and UV sterilisation.
