At the £1.9 million modernisation of the Theatre Royal in Dumfries, Scotland, over 200m2 of Sika-Trocal’s fully bonded ‘SGK’ waterproofing system has been installed to provide a watertight finish for a complex extension and a series of flat roof refurbishments.
Built in 1792 at a cost of £800, the Theatre Royal is acknowledged as the oldest working theatre in Scotland. Owned and funded by the theatre’s Guild of Players, it was closed in 2014 for a comprehensive refurbishment programme to create an upgraded auditorium, new public foyer areas, as well as new studio and workshop facilities.
As part of the project works, ARPL Architects designed an extension to the box office and café that will subsume the neighbouring building. With a series of existing flat roof areas also requiring new waterproofing systems, Sika-Trocal’s fully bonded SGK membrane was installed by McConnell Roofing to provide the perfect combination of cost-effectiveness and a hassle-free application.
The application of the fully adhered membrane resulted in minimal fixings into the existing structure and offered a straightforward and easy application over the flat roof. The system’s flexibility also simplified the detailing works whilst helping to maintain both waterproofing integrity and the attractive finish.

The fully-adhered Type SGK roofing membrane is also approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to have a life expectancy in excess of 35 years. The installation of the Sika-Trocal single ply membrane has ensured this heritage building, its performers and future audiences will be protected from the elements for many years to come.
