Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, one of the UK’s largest mechanical and electrical (M&E) building services businesses, has started work on a £6 million contract for the supply and installation of M&E packages associated with the development of the Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre at Bangor University, North West Wales.
The centre will open in 2014 and contain theatres, a cinema, a design and innovation centre, students’ union, lecture theatres, learning spaces, as well as a bar and café.
The new 10,000 square metre structure will link the City's Memorial Arch to the University's main building by developing into an existing steep slope.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services will supply and install M&E services including heating and ventilation, BMS, lighting, LV power, structured cabling, fire alarm systems, access control, intruder alarm, CCTV and other specialist alarms.
The works are being carried out for Miller Construction (UK) Ltd on behalf of ultimate customer Bangor University.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services’ off-site manufacturing facility Modular Systems + will produce multi-service modules for the project, helping to reduce waste, improve safety and provide high specification value engineering across the project.
By working closely with the customer and the M&E design consultants, Atkins, during the pre-construction phase, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services engaged a specialist supply chain to engineer innovative solutions, a factor which will help the project achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating using sustainable features such as combined heating and power, water saving devices and natural ventilation systems.
Phil McGuire, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, said, “We are delighted to have won further work with Miller Construction on Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre. This project continues our excellent working relationship with one of our key customers, having also worked with Miller Construction on Gateshead Pathology Centre of Excellence and South Trafford College.”
