A leading galvanizing organisation has played a role in the refurbishment of a station in the capital’s rail network.
South East Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has supported Robert Stevens & Sons, a structural steel specialist, with the creation of a complex new passenger staircase installed at a tube station in London.
The project saw the plant galvanize 16 tonnes of structural steel which was used to create a double flight staircase measuring 4 metres in width to replace the existing staircase at the station which had become in urgent need of repair and had failed its structural tests. With more than 2.7 million commuters passing through the station last year, the new staircase formed part of an upgrade and improvement project to ensure safe access to the platform for passengers.
Neil Pearson, Commercial Manager at South East Galvanizers, said: “We were delighted to team up with long-standing customer, Robert Stevens & Sons Ltd, for this particular project. The process involved a lot of work before the galvanizing process could even begin, with our team having to give considerable thought to how best they could be galvanized, taking into account the complex shape and size of the stairs. We worked out of hours to ensure that we would satisfy the client’s requirements and deadlines, and we were all very pleased with the result.”
Brian Pearson, a Director at Robert Stevens & Sons Ltd explained: “Due to the size and scale, the project took over 20 weeks to complete, and it was decided in the early stages that we would galvanize the steel to protect the lifespan of the staircase. South East Galvanizers was our preferred supplier, as we have worked with them for over eight years and they fully understand our requirements.”
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
