Innovative curved roof delivers sustainability benefits

Building envelope specialist, CA Group Limited, has announced the completion of the latest purpose-built warehouse to feature the company’s innovative curved roofing solution - delivering multiple sustainability benefits, at no extra cost.

The 112,200 square foot warehouse, located at Papyrus Way in New Hythe, Kent, was delivered for global integrated property group, Goodman, and their customer, Kent County Council, in conjunction with Readie Construction Limited, and provides the opportunity for customers to have a facility built to their own specification.

Twin-Therm, a fully-walkable cost effective solution from CA Building Products, was selected for the roof and walls. The chosen system incorporated the company’s Quantum self-curved design across the apex of the roof. The innovative design reduces the amount of internal air volume within the building lowering the amount of ‘dead space’ and consequently the amount of energy required to heat the building.

In addition to the reduced heating costs, the solution also enables in-plane rooflights to be installed virtually from eave to eave, increasing natural daylight into the building and minimising shadows, further reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions associated with the lighting load.

The Twin-Therm® system delivers exceptional air tightness levels and has resulted in a rating of 1.96m³/hr/m² @ 50Pa, which has contributed to the building achieving an excellent iSBEM and EPC rating.

Stuart Read, Managing Director of Readie Construction, said of the project: “Our client and end user have both commented that the standard of quality that has been achieved is of the highest level. CA has enabled us to deliver a building ahead of programme, to the agreed budget and to a very high standard of quality.”

Brian Watson, Group Development Director at CA Group, added: “The sustainability benefits which can be achieved through the use of a curved roofing solution are considerable but the benefits don't end there. Because the curve results in a much lower apex, compared with similar systems, it enables clients and developers to overcome height restrictions - one of the key barriers in the planning process.”

Charles Crossland, Managing Director, Goodman UK Logistics said: “We’re always looking at ways to provide our customers with more sustainable warehousing solutions, which suit their individual requirements whilst helping balance environmental impacts with social and economic benefits. Our partnership with CA Group has combined our years of experience in creating high quality logistics developments with their expertise in innovative wall and roofing solutions. The result is a more innovative energy efficient space for our customers and an aesthetically pleasing addition to the local community.”

The fully-walkable cost effective solution is delivered as a carbon neutral envelope and uses man-made mineral fibre insulation, which is non-flammable. The system also successfully addresses the issue of water ingress, one of the biggest hidden costs, by eliminating the use of fasteners, which penetrate the system from the outside to the inside of the building. The building comes with the full Twin-Therm® guarantee on the roof and walls and has been delivered under the Confidex Sustain® initiative.

A spokesperson for KCS, a South Eastern educational and office supplier, who will be occupying the building, concluded: “The additional space, allows us to stock more of the products our customers buy as well as expanding our own ‘YOU’ brand range. The new offices meet the needs of 21st century office life and will allow the KCS team to continue to offer our market leading KCS Customer Care Pledge.”
