CSA Architects have secured planning consent for a spectacular new dwelling at Tintagel.
Now derelict, Castle Minor was owned for ten years by actress Kate Winslet after which it was gutted by fire last year.
Inspired by the culture and myths of this fabled area, CSA have incorporated stone buttresses which appear to emerge from the landscape.
Similar to a small Iron Age settlement, the curve of the building will create a protected ‘keep’ at the centre of the home.
In playful reference to the fabled Tintagel Castle opposite, the new design also includes a moat and drawbridge.
The site, off Atlantic Road, is a level plateau next to a quarry face. The hill is steep so CSA have embedded the tiered house into its landscape. This makes it feel protected but also gives the opportunity to include numerous terraces from which to enjoy spectacular views of the coastline.
Justin Dodge, Managing Director of CSA Architects is particularly pleased with the design for Castle Minor.
“Our innovative design combines the latest technology with an understanding of historic dwellings to communicate the site’s unique history. Hewn out of the landscape, the new house will take a sculptural form which relates to the quarry face and the surrounding landscape. Our design draws inspiration from King Arthur’s castle but benefits from modern renewable technologies that make it sustainable. ”
Sustainability is addressed through a number of key features such as a green roof grown from local species of flora and the use of local materials.
Justin concludes, “We believe that this is a landmark scheme for Cornwall and promotes the full capabilities of CSA Architects, a Cornish architectural practice using really innovative design techniques to create a unique dwelling.”
Work is due to begin on the site later this year.
