Frese wins major contract from The Francis Crick Institute

The Francis Crick Institute, a £650m interdisciplinary medical research institute, has awarded local firm Frese the contract to supply dynamic valves.

Frese is the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of dynamic balancing valves, which allow precise flow and temperature control in a building.

The firm, based in Burscough, has been contracted to supply 2,000 of their Frese Optima and Frese Optima Compact pressure independent control valves (PICVs) to the new Francis Crick Institute.

Following witnessed performance tests at BSRIA, the leading independent UK laboratory for testing, certification and performance verification, the valves were specified for the Institute.

The medical research centre, scheduled to open in 2015, required a heating and cooling system that could provide optimum indoor climate control throughout the building, but particularly in the laboratories where the ground breaking research will take place.

Frese won the contract because of their extensive experience of working within the medical sector, supplying institutions such as Leeds St James and Walsall Hospitals.  Their new valves will supply energy efficient heating and cooling systems, minimise costs and reduce carbon emissions.  Other benefits offered include low maintenance costs coupled with high flexibility for post occupancy extensions or alterations.

Frese supplied 2000 high authority PICVs for the precise temperature control of fan coils (FCUs), air handling units (AHUs) and close control air conditioning units.

Managing director at Frese, Stephen Hart said:  “It was fantastic to be selected for this contract, especially after such rigorous performance testing at BSRIA and due to the quality and reliability of our valves.

"Temperature control is of vital importance in the majority of buildings, but in one such as The Francis Crick Institute, which will conduct biological research into why diseases such as cancer and heart disease develop, all laboratories and facilities must have precise temperature control at all times.

"We have been researching, innovating, designing and refining our dynamic balancing valves for more than twenty five years and we were confident we could help the Institute achieve this.”

The Francis Crick Institute is a consortium of six of the UK's most successful scientific and academic organisations — the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the Welcome Trust, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King's College London – all of which have invested around £650m in total into establishing the charity.  When it is fully operational, The Francis Crick Institute will employ 1,500 staff including 1,250 scientists.

Frese was founded in Denmark in 1944 and opened its UK offices in Burscough, Lancashire, in 2004.  It is a world leading manufacturer of pressure independent flow and temperature control valves for precise indoor climate control of energy efficient heating and cooling systems in residential, commercial and institutional buildings.
