Olympic Parklands designers appointed for first phase of Battersea Power Station redevelopment

Independent design, environment and energy consultancy LDA Design has been appointed as the landscape architect for the first phase of the planned redevelopment of Battersea Power Station.

Rafael Viñoly’s masterplan for the 40 acre (16.18 ha) site is divided into seven main development phases. As part of Phase One, LDA Design will be working alongside Ian Simpson Architects and dRMM to help deliver a high quality, bespoke setting for the iconic central London riverfront development.

The 1930s Grade II* listed landmark will be at the centre of an £8 billion redevelopment. A new town centre for the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea area will be created by building 3,500 new homes, 160,000 sq ft of offices and shops and restaurants, which will link the development with a new Northern Line underground station as well as new public space next to the Thames.

LDA Design has also carefully selected mature tree planting with the signature riverfront garden reflecting the presence of the power station, offering a unique riverside experience.

Rob Aspland, Director at LDA Design, said: “This is one of the biggest development opportunities in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics. While that event helped to regenerate east London, this project will provide a massive boost to Wandsworth and south west London. We are delighted to be involved in both.”

The first phase will see the construction of residential buildings with 800 flats, which will include restaurants, a spa, theatre and office space.

Battersea Project Land Company (BPLC) has announced work at the site will begin later this year, with ground-breaking expected to begin in the second half of 2013.

The remaining phases, including the new underground station will follow, with the entire development scheduled for completion in 2024.
