Leading washroom manufacturer, Washroom Washroom, has effortlessly bridged the gap between old and new during a recent part new-build part refurbishment project in an office building overlooking the Thames.
The high specification office building, situated in a prime location in the heart of London, was completely overhauled during the multi-million pound project.
Designed by Fletcher Priest Architects with Morgan Sindall as main contractor, a great deal of care was taken to ensure that a brand-new riverside façade fitted seamlessly with the existing late 19th century Grade II listed building, as well as within the context of its surroundings.
At the outset of the project, Washroom provided an initial mock-up of the WC design to ensure it was exactly as required for full approval of the client, before being rolled out to all six floors.
A key part of the unique washroom design was the use of a carved Terracotta upstand for the Corian vanity units, specially designed to reflect the carvings on the building’s façade, helping to bring the original and contemporary elements together in a subtle but effective way.
Another key feature of the design was Washroom’s use of floor and ceiling mounted pivot springs on the cubicle doors for the first time meaning that doors are able to open both ways while returning automatically to the closed position.
Washroom’s full height Alto Kristalla glass cubicles were installed along with glass wall linings to create a smooth finish and sophisticated look. In addition, highly durable Corian, which can be cut to any shape and joined with inconspicuous seams to produce a perfectly neat and unified appearance, was used for the vanities.
Trevor Bowers, director at Washroom Washroom, commented: “This was a really interesting project to get our teeth into.
"It offered a great opportunity to incorporate so many bespoke features into the design, including the floor and ceiling mounted spring pivots which worked really well. This is just one of many office refurbishments we’ve taken in our stride in recent years, each very different, and shows the importance of staying away from a one-size-fits-all approach.”
