Hanson steps towards ‘best in class’ goal with new sustainability targets

Hanson UK’s 2012 Performance and sustainability report, published today (07 September), identifies new core targets to take the company towards 2020 and achieve its goal of ‘best in class’ in performance management, customer focus and sustainability.

The report, the company’s fourth as a fully integrated business, covers the calendar year 2011 and is the first to report on performance against five clear themes which underpin Hanson’s approach to sustainability. These are: management systems for continual improvement; creating sustainable communities; climate change and energy; sustainable consumption and production and natural resource protection and enhancing the environment.

Martin Crow, Hanson UK’s head of sustainability, said: “Sustainability is no longer a ‘nice to have’ for Hanson – it’s an essential. The benefits of operating sustainably are clear; if we can save on energy and natural resources, reduce waste and eliminate accidents our business will ultimately be more successful, allowing us to provide quality products and service, and at the same time invest for the future.

“We measure our performance against demanding targets and our latest report shows how targets in key areas such as health and safety, waste minimisation, water reduction and biodiversity have all been exceeded.”

Other highlights include:

  • BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Materials (RSM) certification achieved for Hanson’s  core product lines;
  • Integrated management system launched embracing health and safety, quality and environment;
  • A 17 per cent drop in employee lost time injuries;
  • Biodiversity and geodiversity action plans increased

Hanson’s 2012 report has been prepared under the internationally recognised guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and can be viewed online at: www.hanson.com/uk
