Quinn Radiators has been awarded the top accolade of five stars in an environmental audit by the British Safety Council. The award recognises the high standards of environmental management at Quinn’s state of the art UK manufacturing facility in Newport.
The Five Star Environmental Audit is conducted by the British Safety Council to help businesses integrate sustainability and environmental management into routine operational activities. The audit analyses a company’s environmental policies, processes and practices and recommends improvements. The business is then awarded a star rating from basic (one star) through to excellent (five stars).
The British Safety Council first visited Quinn’s new fully automated radiator plant in October 2011 when it was awarded the very good four star rating. However, the company’s commitment to continuous improvement in environmental management systems and processes has seen it receive the top five star award in an audit just six months later.
Mike Vernall, health, safety and environmental manager at Quinn Radiators, comments: “We were delighted to achieve the high score of 92 per cent in this audit which is testament to the commitment we have as a business to achieving the best environmental management standards.
“Not only does this five star award demonstrate to our customers that our environmental performance is of the very highest standard, it also allows us to apply for the British Safety Council’s Globe of Honour. This is the pinnacle award of any environmental management standard – only ten of which have been awarded world-wide to date. If we successfully achieve the Globe of Honour, we would be the first company in Wales as well as the first Irish company to receive the accolade.”
Richard Hildersley, from the British Safety Council, comments: “We were impressed by the improvements Quinn had made since our last visit when we already classed them as very good. Particular strengths were that duty of care records demonstrated a clear and accountable process for all waste streams generated and the general level of operational control was of a very high standard. The number of initiatives to improve resource efficiency continues to develop and the sales vehicle fleet is being improved to more fuel efficient models, with a significant reduction in pool cars.”
Quinn Radiators has invested £130 million in the fully automated manufacturing facility in Newport which is the most modern and efficient radiator factory in the world. The investment in automation has enabled the company to reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing process and lower the carbon footprint of its products with reduced waste and energy use.
