Kebony holds its position at the forefront of global cleantech innovation

Kebony has, for the third time, been included in the top 100 global clean technology companies list.

With its revolutionary, sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, Kebony has been highlighted as a company whose innovation is benefiting society, business and the environment. The complete list was revealed at the Global Cleantech 100 Summit in Washington DC.

Kebony was selected from over 5,800 companies from 60 countries by the high-level selection committee. The 90-member panel have collectively recognised the pioneering ‘Kebonization’ process, which transforms sustainable wood to adopt properties of hardwood, as an innovation likely to make the most significant impact in the cleantech sector over the next 5–10 years.

Founded in 2009, the Global Cleantech 100 list recognises the most promising and innovative companies in areas such as energy efficiency, biofuels & biochemicals, smart grid, renewable energy, water and waste, and transportation. It provides a snapshot of the technologies that will enable us to advance and develop without inflicting further damage on our environment.

Diverting demand from tropical forests, Kebony allows wood to again be the material of choice for architects, developers and designers as the product is durable, attractive, low–maintenance, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, Kebony’s new wood is fully compliant with the EU Timber Legislation, which came into effect in March banning illegal timber from entering the market.

The Kebonization process takes sustainable soft wood species and treats them under conditions of heat and pressure so they are given the same aesthetical and physical properties as rainforest and toxic treated timber. It has been used in high-profile, international projects, including the new Mary Rose museum, the Battersea Power Station pop-up park and KREOD sculpture.

Kebony has been widely recognised for its green credentials, award wins in 2013 include the Timber Trades Journal award for Achievement in Engineered Timber, the Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Award and the Rushlight Responsible Product Award, the company was also listed as a Technology Pioneer in the 2013 World Economic Forum.

Christian Jebsen, CEO of Kebony commented: “Technology and innovation are crucial if we are to continue to develop without harming the environment, which is why it is so important that there is so much profile given to the Cleantech 100 list. Being recognised for the third time by such an important body encourages us to keep moving forward with the good work that we are doing so we can continue to protect our tropical forests and allow people to benefit from the wonderful properties of hardwood.”
