The widespread thefts of copper pipework from UK construction sites have benefited leading plastic pipework manufacturer Durapipe UK, as sales of its plastic pipes, fittings and valves have increased by over 25% in the last 12 months.
With the raw material price of copper rising by up to 27% for smaller sized copper tube (15mm – 42mm) and as much as 38% for larger sizes (54mm – 108mm), the scrap metal value has also risen considerably. These price hikes have led to copper thefts being reported up and down the country, with a police task force launched in February to tackle the growing problem.
The considerable costs incurred due to copper thefts has put contractors under pressure, as they look to fulfil price promises whilst still making a profit, forcing them to look for alternative pipework material, more cost effective solutions.
The price of plastic systems has remained stable throughout this period and is less likely to fluctuate, therefore giving contractors confidence when pricing medium to long-term projects. Durapipe UK has seen a growth in the level of interest in its plastic systems, with sales of Friatherm CPVC and SuperFLO ABS in particular exceeding expectations.
Commenting on these market dynamics, Durapipe UK marketing manager Mitchell Holmes says: “Copper thefts are a major issue for the UK construction industry and simply by specifiying an alternative material, this threat is completely eradicated.
“Over the last 12 months we have seen an unprecedented number of contractors convert from metal to plastic pipework systems. In fact, a significant number of our orders during this time period have been placed purely to avoid the risk of copper thefts, seeing sales of our Friatherm pipework system increase significantly.”
Explaining the issues that copper thefts has caused for them, Neil Rickaby from Acorn Plumbing and Heating explains: “During construction of The Avenue in Eaglescliffe, Durham, the site suffered from multiple thefts of copper for re-sale. As a result, we needed to look for alternative materials that would reduce the risk for us. With plastic being the obvious choice, we needed a cost effective product, which is exactly what Durapipe UK provided.”
